Safi Police Thwart International Drug Trafficking Operation Involving over 2 Tonnes of Cannabis Resin
Rabat – A joint operation by the Safi provincial security services and the National Brigade of Judicial Police (BNPJ), carried out in close coordination with the services of the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST), led to thwarting, on Saturday evening, an international drug trafficking operation involving 2.1 tonnes of cannabis resin, locally known as ‘chira’, via the Safi port.
The operation led to the seizure of the drug shipment, spread over 60 bales destined for international narcotics trafficking by sea, aboard a Moroccan-registered commercial vehicle intercepted on arrival at the Safi port terminal, the Directorate General for National Security (DGSN) said in a press release on Sunday.
Searches carried out in connection with this case led to the arrest of six individuals aged between 33 and 48, including two members of the public forces, for their alleged involvement in the international trafficking of this shipment of drugs, in addition to the seizure of three other light vehicles.
The suspects were taken into custody for the purposes of the judicial investigation conducted by the BNPJ under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office, with a view to identifying all the local and international ramifications of this criminal activity and arresting all the accomplices.
This security operation is part of ongoing efforts by the DGSN and DGST services to combat international drug trafficking, concluded the same source.
